About us

Operating in the international growth markets for life sciences and medicine/(bio)medical engineering, since its foundation in 1987 the Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering IBMT has worked as technology developer and device manufacturer for customers from all over the world. As a founding member of the Life Sciences Group of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, the Fraunhofer IBMT cooperates closely with its industrial customers as well as public and private customers in the business areas of laboratory technology, theranostics and medical engineering. The IBMT's strategy is focused on the areas of biomedical/medical engineering, biotechnology, 3D bioprinting, active implants, cryotechnology, biobanks, stem cell research, cell-based pharma development and ultrasound. LabBag®: Growing human stem cells - Laboratory in a bag

Human stem cells are a major new hope in the field of medicine. With LabBag®, Fraunhofer IBMT researchers have developed an all-in-one system in the form of a transparent bag that provides a cheap, fast and sterile way for scientists to grow, differentiate and freeze stem cells. The cell models produced can be used for toxicity tests and drug development. Stem cells offer the potential to develop new types of therapies and drugs

Ultrasound technology wirelessly powers active implants

Ultrasound technology wirelessly powers active implants

Unlike drugs, active implants such as electroceuticals act locally, have fewer side effects and function directly through electrical signals, much like the body itself. Fraunhofer IBMT has developed a new technology platform that can power active implants wirelessly via ultrasound. The technology is a viable alternative to battery power and induction, the device is smaller, requires no integrated batteries.

The Fraunhofer IBMT started in cooperation with the Fraunhofer ISC, the Project Center Stem Cell Process Technology Würzburg to generate standardized, high-quality induced pluripotent stem cells in large quantities for pharmaceutical research and mature & physiological cell models for drug development. Development of novel materials for improved cultivation and differentiation of iPS cells and automation solutions will be accelerated.
